Why is barley called the fraction 16?

Reading time - 2 minutes.

One of the common and somewhat strange names for barley is fraction 16. This expression appeared in the Soviet army, where barley porridge was a very common dish in the soldiers' kitchen. The fact is that the shot of the sixteenth caliber is approximately 4 millimeters in diameter. Properly cooked pearl barley looks exactly the same size. The swollen, boiled, crumbly grains not only in size, but also outwardly reminded the army team of shot. This is where the name came from, which was firmly entrenched, for decades to come, for a healthy and nutritious porridge that more than once helped fighters in difficult times.
