In our case, we added water 2 times and boiled the peas for 2 hours - 1.5 in a saucepan, and then added to the soup and cooked for another half hour. The essence is exactly the same as when cooking whole peas. It's just a little easier to cook it - soaking and cooking for a short time, besides, the result is more predictable: if whole peas can be cooked for 1.5 hours and remain firm, then split peas are likely to boil down into porridge.
